Celebrities with Twins!

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

This is only partly Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen related, but I think it’s interesting. The Daily Press put together a list of celebrities who have twins that we probably didn’t know about. Gisele Bundchen? Alanis Morrissette? Justin Timberlake? Napolean Dynamite? All with other halves!

Sure the list does include some obvious ones, like Elvis Presley’s stillborn twin brother Jesse, but I find find discovering people have twins is fascinating! That’s probably why so many people are intrigued by Mary-Kate and Ashley - the twin relationship is rare, special and oh so interesting!

See the full list here. I think it’s interesting, but the Daily Press should have delved a bit deeper, their list could have been much more surprising. Luckily, Wikipedia has a really, really long list of twins, separated by the industry they work in, including a list of famous people with a twin.

Mary-Kate Olsen in Fur in New York City

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

A day after PETA named Mary-Kate Olsen one of the worst-dressed celebrities of the year, MK was spotted out and about in New York City wearing a fur coat!

I doubt the choice was an intentional snub, but I do think it’s pretty funny.

On February 12, Mary-Kate spent the day running a few errands and attending meetings. She was seen walking in NYC in a giant fur coat, sunglasses and black leggings and carrying coffee. See the photos here.

Later that evening, MK attended the Belvedere IX Launch party, which was celebrating a new brand of vodka by Belvedere Vodka. Belverdere IX is supposed to be the ultimate fusion of art and city nightlife in drink form. Since it’s going for that high-brow hipster chic scene, having the party at the Bowery and inviting MK and her boyfriend Nate Lowman is a pretty great marketing move.

I can’t tell if she changed her outfit for the party, but it looks like she never took off that giant fur coat! Was it cold in the Bowery that night?

The star-studded event was held at the Bowery Hotel and attendees included Mena Suvari, Andre, Andre 3000, Devorah Rose and more. Belvedere Vodka is pushing this new brand pretty hard, as they’ve held several launches for the drink all over the country this past week.

Tunes were supplied by DJ Paul Sevigny. The event catered to the hipster NYC scene and was very hip, exclusive and tons of fun. You can see photos from the event here.

Mary-Kate Olsen on Cover of Interview

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Mary-Kate Olsen is the cover girl for the March 2009 issue of Interview magazine and boy is it ever stunning. The photography is by Craig McDean is MK is reminiscent of a futuristic ice queen.

They have a behind-the-scenes video for us to watch too. It’s just a musical montage of the cover photo shoot MK did, but it’s still a lot of fun to watch.

The interview is pretty great as well. MK chats about Barack Obama’s inauguration, how her fashion sense developed and her her fashion inspiration comes from, the natural evolution her and Ashley’s relationship has undergone and how that’s influenced their fashion sense, Full House, her and Ashley’s dozens of movies and more.

The content isn’t really new and a lot of the quotes read exactly as they did in interviews past, but it comes across as insightful and fresh. MK is a very intelligent woman who knows a lot about herself and about fashion and it shows in this interview.

“Some people are natural beauties, some have great style, but sometimes it comes from talent,” Mary-Kate says when asked about where beauty and attractiveness stems from. “With some people, it can even be their voice that makes them attractive.”

Read the interview for yourself here.

The magazine will be on newsstands March 24 and the full interview will be in that. This is definitely one issue I’m going to pick up!

Interview Magazine Interviews Nate Lowman

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

nate lowmanInterview magazine (of which Mary-Kate Olsen is rumored to be the March 2009 cover girl) recently interviewed MK’s boyfriend, New York-based artist, Nate Lowman. They chat about Nate’s evolution as an artist, his childhood, his current projects and more.

Nate is 30 years old and grew up in Idyllwild, California. His father ran a non-profit art school there, which acted as his introduction to the art world, albeit tangentially.

He sees himself as sort of a “remixer”, that is, taking already existing pieces and turning them into art.

“A lot of the images I use are already out there in the public or in the news,” he says. “I just steal them or photograph them or repaint them, so they’ve already been talked about, already been consumed. I’m just reopening them to get at their second, third, or fourth meanings.”

For Nate, his art is all about what the pieces express, what they say about our society and how they speak to the person experiencing the piece.

“It really comes down to language. I feel like the biggest failure of humans is miscommunication,” he explains. “We can’t communicate with each other-we can fight, we can kill, we can do those things well. Language is the most beautiful and destructive thing because it allows you to express yourself, but it totally confuses everything.”

Here’s a slideshow featuring two pieces by Nate:

They never once mention Nate’s relationship with Mary-Kate, which I find refreshing and appealing. They want to put the focus on Nate as a young artist in New York and not on Nate, the celebrity boyfriend. It sounds like Nate has a lot of talent and vision, it will be interesting to see what he does next.

Read the profile here. I think this interview provides some wonderful insight to the man in Mary-Kate’s life.

Sneak Peek of Mary-Kate and Ashley’s Shoe Line

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Mary-Kate and Ashley OlsenOnly days after unveiling their menswear collection for the Row, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen gave Women’s Wear Daily a sneak peek of their upcoming Elizabeth & James shoe collection, which will be launched as part of a lisencing deal with Steve Madden.

The line will feature lots of Olsen-infused styles, including strappy stilettos, metallic leather, pony hair moccasins and Victorian button detailing. Many of the shoes will add almost 5 inches to your height, the heels are high!

If you’re a WWD subscriber, they have photographs of two different pairs to tease you with. The first pair is a brown, strappy gladiator-inspired heel with large buckle detailing above the ankle. The second pair is a pair of sexy brown stilettos with pleating detail and Victorian buttons down the back of the heel. Both pairs are pairs you can completely see on MK and Ashley, they would seamlessly fit into either girl’s wardrobe!

The line will range from 5-0 and will be available at high-end department stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus in March! I’m so excited!

Look for Less: Mary-Kate Olsen at Saks

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

I loved Mary-Kate Olsen’s look last night at the grand opening of Saks Fifth Avenue Contemporary Space. I especially love the jacket.

Here’s how you can get a similar look for less. I’m having a hard time finding a perfect match for the jacket, so if you come across one, let me know!

Image: Newscom

Pants

Image: Macy’s

Any black skinny jean will do for this look. MK is wearing the skinny pant from the Row, but this option from Ponte, available through Macy’s, is only .00 and should do just fine!

Jacket

Image: Dillards

Like I said above, I had a hard time finding a great match for this jacket, but this quilted biker jacket from Bagatelle isn’t a bad substitute. It can be yours for 5 from Dillards.

Gloves

Image: Bluefly

MK is wearing classic leather biker gloves, which I love. They’ll keep your fingers toasty warm while keeping your look pulled together. This pair from Portolano is on .00 on Bluefly.

Scarf

Image: Forever 21

Mary-Kate’s been wearing a lot of scarves lately. I like this Margauz Fringe Scarf from Forever 21 (.80) because it adds a bit of color to the overall look. It’s also available in purple and brown, so get them all and wear a different one everyday!

Shoes

Mary-Kate is wearing simple black ankle boots, making the bag and the jacket the statement pieces here. This Leisha style, currently on sale for .98 at Aldo, is a good substitute.

Bag

Image: Forzieri

How amazing is Mary-Kate’s studded Alexander Wang bag? It’s from his Fall 2009 collection and it’s not even available to the public yet! MK is one lucky lady. Until I’m a millionaire, this studded eco-leather bag by Roccobarocco, which is 9 from Forzieri, will have to do.

Mary-Kate Olsen at Saks Fifth Avenue Contemporary Space Opening

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Mary-Kate Olsen was one of many celebrities who came out to celebrate the grand opening of Saks Fifth Avenue’s new Contemporary Space.

MK looked smashing in her current favorite scarf, a quilted black jacket, skinny black pants and her bag-of-the-moment, a studded beauty I love!

Image: Newscom

The 3,600 square foot space at the NYC flagship store will be used to feature their 15 newest labels. These designers were specifically chosen by the store to help move the store and its clientele into a more modern frame of mind. The fifteen labels are Clu, Geren Ford, Gryphon, Hanii Y, Haute Hippie, Helmut Lang, Organic, Rachel Comey, Rag & Bone, See by Chloe, Superfine, Sienna Miller and sister’s Twenty8Twelve, Vena Cava, What Comes Around Goes Around and Mary-Kate and Ashley’s own Elizabeth & James.

“These designers have the potential to become its future core vendors, moving out of this space allowing us to highlight new emerging designers,” Joseph Boitano, senior vice president, general merchandising manager said. “We chose them not because of a common aesthetic, but rather that each have their own distinctive voice. Whether it be the quirky femininity of Rachel Comey or the urbanity of Helmut Lang, in the new space each brand is able to present a clear and strong message, which then allows our customers to be their own editors, interpreting the trends for [their] lifestyle.”

Lots of models and fashionistas came out to see the redesigned space, including Lauren Bush, Rag and Bone’s Marcus Wainright and David Neville, Helmut Lang’s Nicole and Michael Colovos, Geren Ford, models Coco Rocha and Ali Stevens.

I think this move is a move in the right direction for Saks. All these designers are very contemporary and “in” right now. Watching them is exciting and their new collections should be awe-inspiring.

Also, how awesome is it that MK and Ashley are included in this list of designers? They’ve really been embraced by the fashion community.

In other MK news, she and Nate were spotted out for a walk in New York on Wednesday and weren’t afraid to get affectionate! See the photos here.

Review of Mary-Kate Olsen in FASHION

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Mary-Kate Olsen graces the March 2009 cover of Canadian magazine FASHION. My copy arrived today, so of course, I immediately sat down to read it!

The interview with MK is very short. They chat about how busy she is and her clothing lines with Ashley and how the two of them work together to oversee their design teams.

They also chat about her acting career. She has a few projects lined up for 2009, but wouldn’t talk about them because it’s still too early.

The editorial spread, which is four full page photos, is black and white and very ethereal. MK looks gorgeous and serene.

My only complaint? That both the article and editorial spread was longer. We barely touch the surface of MK and her many, many projects in these short six pages.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Unveil Menswear Line

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

The arrival of the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen menswear line, an expansion of their high-end hush-hush line The Row, is here! While everything is still very much in wraps, Elle UK got a sneak peek of the line and they admit that they are very impressed!

The line draws inspiration from what the top menswear designers are doing today and from the best-dressed men in history. The line is chic, classic and focuses on tailoring, which puts it in sync with the original womenswear collection from The Row. Elle UK expects fashion forward men and boys everywhere to be clamoring for a bit of this line.

I really want to see what MK and Ashley came up with. Apparently the wool overcoats and skinny suit jackets are so great you’ll want to steal them and wear them yourself!

However, the Row is very selective and upscale in where they sell and how they promote, so I’m assuming that the menswear line would be the same. Hopefully a lookbook or two leaks!

I also wonder if we’ll see either Olsen boy, Justin Bartha or Nate Lowman, in the line!
